Digital Learning and Teaching in Higher Education: A New Era of Inequality?
The online event is the official side event of the 7th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum), convened by ECOSOC. The theme of the STI Forum will be closely aligned with that of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) taking place in July 2022.

Overview
The session focused on the theme “Digital Learning and Teaching in Higher Education: A New Era of Inequality?” Expert speakers shared insights into the accelerated digital innovation higher education delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic and analysed how digital methodologies and approaches were either a risk for or an opportunity to mitigate inequality in education.
The objective of the event was to give participants a better understanding of the current state, policies and practices of inclusion in digital and on-line technology enabled higher education. How can technologies enhance or limit access to education in terms of socioeconomic status, geography, age, etc.? How can STI tools and approaches benefit all, and not only those who are already in a privileged environment?
Speakers offered practical recommendations from different point of views to both higher education institution leaders and policymakers.
The content of the session is based on the outcomes of an in-depth consultation process and the recently published “ARC8 Outlook Report 2030 on ʻInclusive and Diverse Higher Education in Asia and Europe’ :
