Education

Education is one of ASEF’s key thematic areas. In this field, we connect the youth, students, teachers & educators & higher education leaders and managers with policy makers across both regions. Through policy dialogues, capacity building and the creation of bi-regional networks, we contribute to innovation in the formal and non-formal education sector and towards the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda2030.

Education projects promote inclusive & equitable access across all education sectors and engage civil society and government stakeholders in interdisciplinary, technology-driven and lifelong learning opportunities to enhance quality education.

Further, we bring the voice of the youth into the ASEM Process and facilitate a structured dialogue between young people and ASEM Leaders, Foreign Ministers and Education Ministers. ASEF’s education projects are part of the ASEM Education Process and their outcomes feed into the agenda of the ASEM Education Ministers’ Meetings (ASEMMEs).

Over the past 10 years

ASEFEdu has organised more than 50 projects in secondary education, higher education & the youth sector. These activities have provided the opportunity for experiential learning and capacity building to over 3,700 participants from all 51 ASEM countries. Our project have an equal gender balance and welcome participants from all socio-economic and educational background and mixed abilities.

Here are some of our recent projects in the 3 pillars:

• Secondary School Teaching: the Classroom Network Project brings together Teachers from Secondary & Vocational Schools for teacher capacity building and collaboration between the 2 regions. The 2022 ClassNet School Collaborations focused on Education for Sustainable Development & Holistic Learning Environments.
• Higher Education: in the space of Higher Education, we work with Higher Education Researchers, Managers, Policymakers & student organisations to facilitate the exchange of good practices, and inform policies through evidence and policy dialogues. We are currently working on a research project entitled “ASEM Higher Education Mapping: Working towards the SDGs” that explores Higher Education institutions contribution to the SDGS & Ministries of Higher Education’s policies contributing to the SDGs.
• Youth: in the field of youth, we offer non-formal education opportunities through capacity building trainings and collaboration, and aim to bring the voice of the youth into the ASEM Process. Recent projects include the Young Leaders Summit with a focus on Leadership & the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Summer University with a focus on Sustainable Urbanisation.
