The Asia-Europe Energy Policy Forum has organised a side-event at the Twenty-Third Session of the Conference of Parties (COP23) held on 13 November 2017 in Bonn, Germany. The side-event “Climate and energy policies towards a low carbon future in Asia and Europe” was jointly organised with the Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development Law and Policy (CSDLAP), and hosted by the government of Korea in their national pavilion.
With the participation of experts experienced in analysing and drafting low emission growth strategies, this side-event explored opportunities and challenges in the development of a low carbon roadmap.
The panel shared case studies showcasing how to transform existing structural and regulatory infrastructures in Asia and Europe to enable the adoption of renewable and low-carbon solutions, with consideration of the following guiding questions:
- In addition to the technological prospects and opportunities, what are the political, economic, and social instruments to facilitate a low carbon economy?
- How to identify key policies ensuring technical transformation of energy infrastructures while reducing carbon emissions?
- What are the long-term strategies and key policies to prevent negative growth?
- What is the role of public-private partnership as an instrument for energy transformation?
