OVERVIEW
As part of the Asia-Europe Democratisation and Justice Series of workshops, this event was held to deepen discussions on safeguards and oversight bodies, as well as the relationship between the police and the community. Participants from oversight institutions such as Ombudsman Offices in Asia and Europe and heads of police forces and police commissions were invited to attend.
THE ISSUES
The workshop addressed such questions as:
– What are the existing oversight mechanisms in Asia and Europe?
– How do these mechanisms mediate between the constabulary and the local communities?
– What are the factors that promote awareness, trust, and confidence within the local society?
