OVERVIEW
Held in conjunction with the Seoul 2000 Summit, this conference gathered 61 ASEM experts — including policy makers, academics, and businessmen — to address major issues relevant to the ASEM process. Discussions centred on the following topics:
– The reform process in Asia and Europe
– ASEM and political dialogue
– ASEM and trade
During the discussions, participants re-examined the ASEM process since its inception, its goals, and its achievements. They suggested that the ASEM should help establish a new political dialogue based on mutual respect between Europe and Asia, which would encompass sensitive issues such as globalisation, human rights, and the environment. They also shared ideas on the future direction of the ASEF and how it could strengthen its role in the ASEM process.
