OVERVIEW

“What Does It Mean to Relate?”

“What Does It Mean to Relate?” is alecture by curator and programmer Catarina Saraiva (Portugal), who explores the relationship between programmers, curators, and artists. How do they relate and see themselves, and what are the challenges they face in communicating with their audiences?

Catarina Saraivais a producer and programmer. After 10 years as the Artistic Director of independent arts space Alkantara in Lisbon, Portugal, she moved to Madrid in 2009 where she undertook a postgraduate course in Performing Studies Practices and Visual Culture at the University of Alcalá de Henares. During her studies, she initiated the laboratory and research project “Linha de Fuga,” which questions the relationship between programmer and creator. This project ended with an artistic programme hosted in October by La Casa Encendida in Madrid.Since September 2010, Catarina has been part of the think tank and development group of El Ranchito, a research project promoted by contemporary art centre Matadero Madrid.

Catarina collaborated as a dramaturg in The Diary of Alice, also a Pointe to Point follow-up project. She is also currently developing a research project on the working methodologies of contemporary performing arts programmers and creators.

“Pointe Aside”

“Pointe Aside” is adocumentary by Lim How Ngean, an alumnus of Pointe to Point 2009, and Kent Chan. This 40-minute “accidental” documentary pieces together random footage shot during the Pointe to Point 2009 residency held in Lisbon, Portugal.

The premise of “Pointe Aside” is this: Dancers move to communicate. However, in this documentary exchange, language fails them and their bodies are negated. Thus, the documentary provides a glimpse into the dancers’ process as they navigate their collaborations with one another and deal with conflict.

How Ngean has been actively involved in the performing arts for the past 20 years in various capacities. He has been a performer in theatrical productions in Singapore and Malaysia, and has written features and reviews on dance and theatre. He has also been involved in dramaturgical projects such as the dance performance “Q&A” at the 2009 Singapore Arts Festival.
