OVERVIEW
This lecture consisted of two presentations titled “The Euro After 10 Years: Achievements, Challenges, And Implications For Asia” and “Regional Co-Operation In East Asia: Evolution And Challenges.” The presentations were conducted by Klaus Regling, a leading policy maker, and Hadi Soeastro, a leading economist and keen observer of regional co-operation processes in Asia.
THE ISSUES
– Could the economic and financial crisis lead to a break-up of the euro area?
– Or rather, will it lead to stronger internal co-operation in Europe and accelerate the enlargement of the euro area?
– There was great enthusiasm about the rise of “monetary regionalism” in East Asia, but the developments of these financial initiatives have been slow. Why has this been the case?
– What can the region learn from the European experience?
