The National University of Singapore Sociology Society (NUSSS) and the ASEF University Alumni Network (ASEFUAN) in partnership with the National University of Singapore, the European Union Centre in Singapore and the Asia-Europe Foundation co-organised the 2012 Model ASEM Summit in Singapore.
Model ASEM is a simulation activity organised to increase awareness of and knowledge about the ASEM process among young people. Through role-play, students learn the skills of compromise, negotiation and consensus-building. Model ASEM also provides them with the opportunity to better understand the complexity of international relations.
Under the theme, “Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity” (theme of the 9th ASEM Summit in Laos, 2012), the two-day ASEM simulation conference brought together 126 participants from 61 universities across Asia and Europe.
The goals of the 2012 Model ASEM were:
a) To generate interest and increase awareness and knowledge about the ASEM process among young people;
b) To establish a forum for dialogue where young people can engage in discussions on issues that are high on the ASEM agenda and are of mutual concern to youth in both regions, in an atmosphere that places emphasis on mutual respect and tolerance; and
c) To provide a channel for young people to put forward their ideas and work together on a common vision towards an ideal ASEM.
