Overview
Human Frames is a series of 10 film programmes examining the human condition. Over 70 short films by 20 Asian and European independent film makers will be screened. Lead curator Silke Schmickl and co-curator Stéphane Gérard from French independent film label Lowave presented the project at The Substation on 17 February.
The films follow a framework inspired by the ancient theory of humours as a way of analysing the human character. They focus on one of the 10 emotional states: melancholy, fear, anger, fanaticism, isolation, madness, happiness, desire, mono no aware and impermanence. The goal was not to force the films to fit into the analysed temperament but to illustrate the nuances and richness of these feelings through a creative cinematographic approach. Each programme highlights its own meaning while pointing to links with the others.
An initial selection of the films was also presented during the Asian Hot Shots Festival in Berlin in 2010 and the entire programme will tour to more locations in Germany in 2011: contemporary arts centre Kunst im Tunnel , Düsseldorf, cultural association Werkstatt der Kulturen , Berlin, and independent arts cinema Filmhaus , Cologne. The project is supported by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) through its Asia-Europe Cultural Partnerships Initiatives: Film programme.
Other curators of Human Frames included Masayo Kajimura (Germany/Japan), Victric Thng (Singapore) and artistic consultant François Michaud (France). The project started with a Forum Discussion – Trends in Experimental Cinema in Singapore (May 2010) which was organised as part of the 1st Experimental Film Forum: Experiments in Progress. It gathered over 20 emerging filmmakers, curators and film critics from Asia and Europe to discuss relevant issues and trends in the experimental film movements in the two regions.
