The Asia-Europe Environment Forum (ENVforum) co-organised a panel, Consultation on the Post-2015 Development Agenda: Sustainable Development Goals and the Means of Implementation, on 3 February 2015 in New Delhi, India as a special event leading up to the 15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. The Consultation aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange and promote multi-stakeholder dialogue among regional and international organizations, research institutes, policy-makers, and the corporate sector on the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their means of implementation, and Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) as an important case in SDG implementation.
Ms. Grazyna Pulawska, Project Manager of ASEF’s Political & Economic Department, shared the outcomes of the ENVforum’s three-part research series, entitled Sustainable Development Goals and Indicators for a Small Planet. The ENVforum presented its unique methodological framework and dashboard of proposed SDGs, as well as recommendations for indicators and targets to monitor and encourage the translation of the proposed goals into tangible outcomes. Along with these findings, the ENVforum shared its on-going research on governance and financing as integral factors for national and local level SDG implementation.
The ENVforum invited Dr Raman Letchumanan, former Head of the Environment Division of the ASEAN Secretariat to speak on challenges concerning data availability and consistency as they relate to SCP. Dr. Letchumanan is experienced in the nexus between sustainable development and data through his work with ASEAN and the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment in issues related to the environment, conservation, and disaster management. Ms Ella Antonio, Director of the Earth Council, was also in attendance, and spoke on her experience in multi-stakeholder participation and partnerships in various aspects of governance, having worked in organizations ranging from her current appointment in the Earth Council to her career in the National Economic and Development Authority of the Philippines.
The Consultation set the stage for the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, whose 2015 theme “Sustainable Development Goals and Dealing with Climate Change” provided a timely platform for knowledge exchange in all matters related to sustainable development as preparation for upcoming landmark commitments and negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda.
