‘Text & Subtext’ took place in Singapore from 15th June to 30th July, 2000 and comprised an exhibition, a three-day conference and two publications. It was organised by Earl Lu Gallery, LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts in Singapore and supported by ASEF. This exhibition features the artworks of 22 Asian women artists. Some of them live and create their work within Asia, while others live and work outside Asia. Their individual artworks range from 2-D and 3-D works that include installations, performance art, time-based works, sound video, multimedia and conceptual art. Several are large-scale artworks. Some combine up to 100 separate elements in a single work, while others employ complex technologies. The exhibits come in a range of mediums, disciplines and explore various genres.
The exhibition was a core event of the Singapore Arts Festival 2000. In conjunction with the exhibition, there was also a three-day conference, which aimed to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and to facilitate networking between artists, students and the public.
