The Third Intersessional Meeting of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) is one of the last steps in preparation of the Rio+20 Conference.

The Conference will take place in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) or the “Earth Summit”, in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.

It is envisaged that the Conference will be attended at the highest possible level, including representations of Heads of State and Government. The Conference will result in a focused political document, currently at the “zero draft” stage.

Taking into account the importance of Third Intersessional for the dialogue between Asia and Europe on securing the best outcomes of the Rio+20, the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations in cooperation with the Asia-Europe Foundation organised a Briefing-discussion on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development for around 20 Permanent Representatives to the UN and lead negotiators at the intersessionals of the UNCSD.

The Briefing-discussion took place on, March 26th, from 6:15 pm. till 7:45 PM at the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations. H.E. Jean-Pierre THÉBAULT, France Ambassador the Environment chaired the discussion.  Ambassador Mr. Brice LALONDE, Executive Coordinator, Secretariat for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) and Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia presented an overview of the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development and opened the floor for discussion. Ms. Sol Iglesias, Director for Intellectual Exchange at the Asia-Europe Foundation moderated the session.

This Briefing-discussion is a part of the Asia-Europe Strategies for the Earth Summit 2012 organised by the Asia-Europe Environment Forum (ENVforum).
