OVERVIEW
A team of eight distinguished Asian speakers were invited to attend this meeting; they gave presentations on the theme “Asia And Europe: A New Agenda After The Crisis,” drawing from their own professional or national perspective. The speakers included the former Governor of the Indonesia Central Bank, the former Thai Minister of Commerce, analysts from China and Korea, and representatives of the private sector.
Representatives of major multilateral financial organisations such as the IMF, OCED, BIS, and ADB also presented their analyses of the situation as well as their ideas on preventive measures for the future. Questions were taken from a packed hall of some 120 audience members — many of whom were economists and specialists themselves. This provided a European perspective to the Asian financial crisis.
THE ISSUES
– The role of the IMF in the rescue package, and the non-financial reactions their involvement has caused
– Redefined roles for multilateral bodies and mechanisms for future monitoring
