The ASEM Cultural Festival (#ASEMfest) revives a tradition of cultural programming alongside high-level meetings of Asian and European leaders. ASEF, as the only permanent institution of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), supports the organisation of the Festival alongside ASEM Summits, meetings of Heads of State and Governments, as well as ASEM Foreign Ministers. In 2021, the ASEM Cultural Festival was held alongside the 13th ASEM Summit (ASEM13), as the official cultural side-event.
This year’s edition, titled Asia and Europe: Cultures Connect, was held from 22 November to 31 December 2021 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and online via the Festival’s dedicated website. A curtain raiser offering a slice of the festival programme to live audiences in Brussels from 15-26 November 2021.
Co-organised by the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MCFA), the European Union and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), ASEMfest at ASEM13 aimed to build deeper cultural connections and enable cultural exchange between Asia and Europe by bringing together artistic excellence and cultural diversity from the two regions on one platform.
Over 30 arts events featuring over 100 Asian and European artists showcased the rich cultural diversity and brilliant creative collaborations from Asia and Europe through theatre, dance, music, visual arts and interdisciplinary presentations.
