`Search: Hamlet,’ in Elsinore, Denmark from 16th-24th August, 2002 saw Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen gather 20 European and Asian artists in his search for a new Hamlet character belonging to a modern Asian-European culture.
The performance consisted of diverse features from Asian and European performing arts, putting on display the different techniques and expressions stemming from classical Japanese ballet, Malaysian martial art dance, modern Euro-American dance, Bali court mask dance, Thai mask dance, Danish rock, Chinese underground video documentaries, Swedish stand-up theatre, Asian gamelan, Danish silent movies and Euro-Japanese butoh.
`Search: Hamlet’ was a co-production between Face to Face, Denmark and Theatre Works, Singapore, and is supported by ASEF.
The play, created specifically for the Hamlet Summer, also presented during ASEM 4 at Theatre Edison, Copenhagen (11th-24th September), attracted more than 6,000 people.
