OVERVIEW
Delivered by Plamen Tonchev, this lecture tour series focused on democracy-building in post-conflict situations by looking at four case studies from Cambodia, East Timor, Bosnia, and Cyprus. Rodolfo Severino, former Secretary-General of ASEAN and Research Fellow at the Institute of South-East Asian Studies, served as discussant during the opening lecture, and he provided insights on ASEAN perspectives and approaches. In the discussions between speaker Tonchev and the audience, topics analysed included the following:
– Multilateralism in the management of conflicts and post-conflict situations
– Longer-term perspectives in the building of democracies
– Whether the elaboration of a model to post-conflict democracy building and recovery was possible
