OVERVIEW
Over the past two decades, initiatives to implement sustainable development have been undertaken all over the world. However, incorporating the environment into the larger framework of development remains a major challenge, and this incorporation is crucial to attaining the twin goals of poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability. The 25th Asia-Europe Lecture Tour highlighted the experiences of selected Asian countries in pursuing sustainable development.
THE ISSUES
This lecture addressed the crucial questions of how Asian countries have been developing their National Sustainable Development Strategies; how the environment has been fitted into Asia’s socio-economic development strategies; how far Asian governments have gone to mainstream environmental issues into their policies and plans; the institutional mechanisms that are in place; and what lessons might be drawn from the Asian examples.
