The 10th Asia Europe Economic Forum Conference took place on 15–16 May 2014 in Berlin, Germany. The theme of the Conference was ‘Asia and Europe in Times of Global Change’.
The day and half long event examined a number of fundamental economic issues that are of particular relevance to ASEM Members. Among the issues addressed were the rebalancing of the Asian economics in the context of global governance, new EU governance structures, the revitalizing of Europe’s economy, means to achieve sustainable growth in Asia, the Free Trade Agreement landscape, and evolving global monetary policy.
The 10th AEEF was successful in further building the programme’s already strong reputation with the high-level event welcoming the participation of leading economic experts from both Asia and Europe.
Key conclusions from the Conference were
Trade and economic linkages between Asia and Europe have strengthened over trade and economic relations. Structural reforms must be adopted on both sides to make the recovery more sustainable and make economies more resilient to global economic challenges. In monetary policy, we have seen different approaches across Asia, Europe and the US. While the US is leading the charge out of the recession, the Euro Area is behind the curve, Japan is taking a more aggressive course of action via Abenomics, and China is on a different path with a conservative monetary policy and appreciating currency.
