Held in conjunction with the 13th ASEM Summit (ASEM13), the 10th ASEF Editors’ Roundtable (ASEFERT10) is the 2021 edition of a 2-day biennial forum aimed at promoting dialogue, strengthening ties and cross-continental cooperation between 20-30 news editors from across Asia and Europe.
FORMAT
The ASEF Editors’ Roundtable series is a biennial project that gathers editors and senior journalists of major print or broadcast media in ASEM countries to exchange perspectives on current affairs which are pertinent to Asia and Europe. This is in line with ASEF’s mission to promote understanding, strengthen relationships and facilitate cooperation among the people, institutions and organisations of Asia and Europe. By organising every Roundtable on the sidelines of the ASEM Summit, it also enhances ASEM’s visibility through increasing journalists’ awareness of ASEM and encouraging media coverage of the Summit.
OBJECTIVES
• Enable editors and senior journalists from prominent Asian and European media to interact with each other, as well as with key figures of the ASEM process, thereby fostering better mutual understanding and new contacts between the two regions
• Increase awareness of the ASEM process among editors in ASEM countries
• Identify trends in the reporting on Asian-European relations and ASEM-related matters
ASEM RELEVANCE
Developing closer relations with media has been a key issue in the ASEM Press and Public Awareness Management Strategy, which highlights the importance to “continue media exchange programmes for ASEM as part of ASEF’s media programme”. ASEFERT10 helps to enhance the continued relevance of ASEM to the civil society which includes the media communities.
Synergy with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 seeks to “Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”. It is with this principle of public access to information that ASEFERT10 is organised.
