On 7-8 September 2022, on behalf of ASEF Public Health Network (ASEF PHN), Ms Riko KIMOTO, Manager for International Public Health at ASEF, hosted both a panel and a follow-up roundtable session at the World AMR Congress in Washington, DC (US).
The panel session, entitled “Antimicrobials’ market failures and international collaboration: Linking up with Health Systems”, featured Dr Monika Schneider (Director of Global AMR Policy, Shionogi Inc.) and Dr Gerald BLOOM (Professional Fellow, UK Institute of Development Studies).
Ms KIMOTO opened the talk by delineating the linkage between Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the acknowledgement of antimicrobials as an essential component of health systems and AMR as a vital component to achieve sustainable UHC. She illustrated this point by referencing ASEF PHN’s past work on the topic and disclosed an upcoming initiative to bring added value to and further advance the former (to be publicly announced soon).
The two panelists then presented their takes, from both an industry and academic research perspectives, on how to leverage existing health systems to best mitigate AMR and address the market failures for antimicrobials, including R&D and commercialization. The UK’s ‘subscription’ model for antibiotics as well as the Shionogi-GARDP-CHAI agreement were presented as potential fixes for the broken antimicrobial market while several recommendations from a science-policy standpoint were also shared on a more general level.
The conversations engendered by the panel session were then further explored in the follow-up roundtable which offered valuable insights on the topic by participating government, private, and not-for-profit AMR stakeholders.
