Overview
To strengthen ties between the ASEM process and the work of ASEF, ASEF developed the publication programme “Outlook Report” in 2012. Published biennially in conjunction with each ASEM Summit, the two-volume publication seeks to provide both quantitative and qualitative analyses on a selected topic with particular focus on Asia-Europe relations and its implications on the ASEM process.
In 2012, ASEF published its first report of the series entitled ASEM Outlook Report 2012 – Foresight is 20/20: Scenario Building for Policy Analysis and Strategy Development. Presenting both quantitative indicators and perceptions, it offered separate but complementary sets of insights into the status and future possibilities for Asia-Europe relations. The publication was designed to contribute to the 9th ASEM Summit, which took place in Vientiane, Lao PDR in November 2012.
In 2014, ASEF launched a follow-up Outlook Report as a contribution to the 10th ASEM Summit that took place in Milan, Italy from 16-17 October 2014. Entitled ASEF Outlook Report 2014/2015 – Facts & Perspectives, the publication provided an analysis of emerging global and regional challenges associated with sustainable growth and development – a topic that was closely aligned to the theme of the ASEM Summit, “Responsible Partnership for Sustainable Growth and Security”. Furthermore, it contributed to a better understanding among Asian and European countries on how to reshape growth in a way that delivers upon the economic, social, and environmental responsibilities required by sustainable development.
On 7 July 2016, ASEF launched its third publication of the series focusing on connectivity between Asia and Europe in line with the 11th ASEM Summit held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on 15-16 July 2016. In its contribution to developing recommendations for the future direction of ASEM, the ASEF Outlook Report 2016/2017 – CONNECTIVITY: Facts and Perspectives identifies main components of and assesses the level of connectivity between Asia and Europe. Furthermore, recommendations on how different sectors can contribute to making Asia-Europe connectivity stronger and sustainable were developed.
