There exists today considerable security challenges facing Asia and Europe—including non-traditional security issues such as climate change, migration, food and maritime security. Hence, as the Asia-Europe partnership grows, the issue of future security cooperation between the two regions is further being explored.
ASEF and its partners in the Europe-Asia Policy Forum organised a public briefing (13 December 2011) on the topic of ‘Improving Regional Security Architectures through an Asia-Europe Strategic Partnership’.
Participants discussed prospects for further inter-regional cooperation in conflict management. Taking the cue from the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM), the EU’s first peacekeeping mission in Asia, the discussions centred on the institutional developments taking place in Asia and Europe and how they affect future coordination of peacekeeping efforts and conflict management activities between both regions.
A detailed report from the briefing will be available for download in early 2012.
