A new publication Political Parties and Citizen Movements in Asia and Europe was launched by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the Hanns Seidel Foundation and International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) under the realm of their project Political Parties and the Citizen.
The publication appears under the Asia-Europe Democratisation and Justice (AEDJ)series. It looks closely at the initiatives and activities undertaken by political parties in Asia and Europe in relation to Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) and citizen movements. Since political parties in the two regions operate in different domestic political contexts and under different socio-economic conditions, varying approaches and a myriad of experiences exist. Adding to this is the realisation that there is no common definition of democracy and no single political trajectory towards democracy.
The case studies presented in this publication highlight common issues, challenges and lessons that can be shared between the two regions. They also serve as examples of best practices from which actors from Asia and Europe and beyond can learn and benefit.
