New badge unveiled for ASEF’s Creative Encounters programme

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) marks the third year of its programme Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe with a brand new badge that will be used to promote the following projects to be implemented this year:  

Catch-Tell-Transform: The 4th Documentary Filmmaker’s Workshop

April – October 2013 in Manila, Philippines

A capacity building workshop gathering young filmmakers and mentors from Asia and Europe.  Each participant will take part in lectures, screenings, production training and on-location shooting sessions to create an original documentary film. Upon completion, the films will be widely screened including at film festivals in Asia and Europe.  This project builds on a legacy of ASEF projects that have supported young filmmakers from the two regions since 2002.

Organisers:  Goethe Institut Manila and the Embassy of France to the Philippines in collaboration with Ateliers Varan (France)


Platform for Asian and European Mobility Funders    

5-6 June 2013 in Prague, Czech Republic

A networking meeting for Asian and European arts funders (public and private) to jointly explore the issues and challenges related to the mobility of cultural practitioners, especially between Asia and Europe.  The meeting aims to position cultural mobility and exchange at the heart of cultural policies governing international cultural co-operation.

Public Laboratory  

20 July -7 August 2013 in Vienna, Austria

A series of dance performances and public dialogues that will take place in the framework of the exhibition ‘Dance in Asia’ at the Museum of Ethnology. The highlight of this performance will be the presentation of the lives and works of contemporary artists in relationship to historical artefacts from the museum collection.

Towards an Indonesian Literary Translation Centre – Workshops     

22-29 September 2013 in Jakarta, Indonesia

A series of intensive translation workshops for authors and emerging translators that aims to promote literary translations between Asian and European languages. The event will conclude with a public reading of the translated works. This project is part of larger goal to set up Indonesia’s first translation centre.

DEFAULT 13      

17-26 September 2013 in Lecce, Italy

A biennial project that addresses key questions about the role of cultural initiatives and government policies in revitalising urban centres. In 2013, the 2nd edition of this project offers a ten-day masterclass and residency for young visual artists from Asia and Europe. Here, they will discuss the role of art in social and urban contexts and make proposals for site-specific art works. A series of public meetings will also be organised before the residency to raise awareness on public art and urban regeneration. The number 13 in the title refers to the year 2013. The 1st edition of the project took place in 2011.

East-East 4

23 – 29 September 2013 in Kaunas, Lithuania

A workshop and seminar for architecture students from Asia and Europe to encourage responsible and ethical architectural design practices. In its fourth edition in 2013, participants will work together and make a design proposal for the waterfront of Kaunas, Lithuania’s second largest city. The design will be presented and exhibited at the Kaunas Architecture Festival. The project is named after its efforts to connect Eastern Europe with East Asia.
