Participants of the 1st Asia-Europe Education Workshop held in Manila

A meeting of education and finance experts from Asia and Europe studying the impact of the recent financial crisis on higher education has concluded that Asian countries were less severely affected by this crisis than by the Asian financial crisis which occurred in late 1997. At the 1st Asia-Europe Education Workshop on The Impact of the Financial Crisis to Higher Education, held last 25-26 March 2010 in Manila, Philippines, participants confirmed this finding through a number of case studies presented by the Asian participants at the workshop. They also identified additional data needed for appropriate policy inputs and recommendations. To address this need, Asian and European higher education stakeholders should explore and discuss a mechanism to assist in compiling and comparing data as well as monitor trends (such as funding structures).

Recommendations from the workshop will be channelled to two upcoming ASEF events – the 4th Connecting Civil Societies of Asia and Europe Conference (2-3 October 2010) in Brussels and the 2nd ASEM Rectors’ Conference (November 2010) in Seoul.

This project was the first in a series of Asia-Europe Education Workshops under the auspices of ASEF’s ASEM Education Hub (AEH), which aims at promoting higher education co-operation among ASEM member-states.
