2015 is an important year in the global fight against climate change. Preparations are on-going to organise a post-Kyoto framework in the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in December in Paris, France. In this context, ASEAN member states have responded by aiming to “encourage ASEAN common understanding on climate change issues and, where possible, engage in joint efforts and common positions in addressing these issues” (ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC)).
The Asia-Europe Environment Forum (ENVforum), together with the French Regional Delegation to ASEAN and the Hanns Seidel Foundation, will support ASEAN’s goal by organising a 2-day workshop on climate change negotiations for policy–makers from ASEAN member countries to contribute to the preparatory process leading up to COP21. The workshop will be a featured programme in the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Regional Forum on Climate Change (RFCC) taking place on 1-3 July 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand.
This workshop will serve to facilitate discussions among policy–makers from the ASEAN region in order to increase their understanding of climate change issues, particularly on the negotiation process for ASEAN diplomats and stakeholders involved in the international debate. The workshop will include presentations on challenges in climate change to serve as a decision support tool, group work and plenary discussions, as well as a simulation of international climate change negotiations.
