The 23rd ASEF Summer University (ASEFSU23) is a 3-month long interdisciplinary Hackathon journey for young Asians & Europeans on “Liveable Cities for a Sustainable Future”.
Taking place between September and November 2021 (3 programme blocks a 2 weeks each), the Summer University connects young hackers, designers, innovators, urban planners and SDG experts from 51 countries to collaborate & develop urban solutions in three of the most populated countries in ASEM: Bangladesh, India & Pakistan.
ASEF is looking for recognised experts to develop 6 background papers on Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities (2 papers on each country). A financial compensation of up to SGD 1,000 per paper will be granted. These papers aim to provide our non-specialist youth participants a solid knowledge foundation on the topics.
We are commissioning papers of max.4,000 words (excluding summary and further readings) on the following topics:
Bangladesh:
- A paper to provide a general overview and contextualisation of the challenges related to sustainable urbanisation and SDG11 in the context of Bangladesh, with a focus on Dhaka.
- A paper to provide a more specific overview on the issue of waste management in Bangladesh, with a focus on Dhaka.

- A paper to provide a more specific overview on the issue of child obesity and how it relates to sustainable urbanisation and SDG11 in India, with a focus on Delhi NCR.

- A paper to provide a general overview and contextualisation of the challenges related to sustainable urbanisation and SDG11 in the context of Pakistan, with a focus on Lahore.
- A paper to provide a more specific overview on the issue of urban mobility in Pakistan, with a focus of Lahore.

Eligibility
- Citizen of any of the 51 ASEM Partner countries
- Recognised academic or relevant expertise in the field of sustainable urbanisation and/or the specific topic you wish to choose, preferably with sound knowledge on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their interconnections.
- Expert from any relevant academic discipline with the capacity to develop clear, concise and cross-disciplinary synthesis on the topic.
