The 23rd ASEF Summer University (ASEFSU23) is a 3-month long interdisciplinary Hackathon journey for young Asians & Europeans on “Liveable Cities for a Sustainable Future”.
Taking place between September and November 2021 (3 programme blocks a 2 weeks each), the Summer University connects young hackers, designers, innovators, urban planners and SDG experts from 51 countries to collaborate & develop urban solutions in three of the most populated countries in ASEM: Bangladesh, India & Pakistan.
ASEF is looking for recognised experts (or groups of experts) to develop background papers on 3 specific issues connected to sustainable urbanisation :
- Waste Management
- Child Obesity
- Urban Mobility
These papers aim to provide our non-specialist youth participants a solid knowledge foundation on these 3 topics and their connections with Sustainable Urbanisation in the 51 ASEM Partner Countries.
For each paper, authors will need to select 1 Country (ASEM Partner Country) and 1 City (minimum 200,000 people) within the selected Country.

Financial compensation
A financial compensation of SGD 1,000 per paper will be granted.
Eligibility
- Citizen of any of the 51 ASEM Partner countries
- Recognised academic or relevant expertise in the specific topic chosen, preferably with sound knowledge on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their interconnections.
- Expert from any relevant academic discipline with the capacity to develop clear, concise and cross-disciplinary synthesis on the topic.
Application and paper submission timeline
- Application deadline: Wednesday, 13 October 2021
- Result of application: Thursday, 14 October 2021
- Manuscript submission: Wednesday, 27 October 2021
- Revised manuscript submission (if needed): Sunday, 31 October 2021
