ASEF supported the 9th edition of the International Conference for Cultural Policy Research (ICCPR) in Seoul, Korea and commissioned a report based on the key ideas coming out of this gathering. This event is one of the main international conferences on cultural policy, which is being organised for the first time in Asia.

Topics of mutual interest for Asia and Europe highlighted at ICCPR include: need for cultural policies to remain independent of the creative economy rationale; need for greater professionalisation of cultural work including economic compensation for artists and arts managers; and, civic engagement in participatory cultural policy-making in a digital, globalised world. Download the full report on ICCPR 2016 by Dr Marcin POPRAWSKI of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland at http://www.asef.org/images/docs/Report-ICCPR2016-180716.pdf

Specifically, ASEF supported a panel discussion on cultural labour titled “Finding Their Value: Artistic Survival and Public Policy” on 6 July 2016 at ICCPR. Four cultural experts, Dr Ruth BERESON (Australia), Dr Hyein KIM (Korea), Dr Kate OAKLEY (UK) and Dr Stevphen SHUKAITIS (UK) led the discussion. The panel addressed a variety of issues including the social status of the artist, complexities of cultural work and possible policy prescriptions regarding artists’ work conditions and pay. The report of the panel is now available for download here http://www.asef.org/images/docs/Report-FindingTheirValue-180716.pdf

ASEF worked in partnership with, among others, Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul; Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS); and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea.
