We are pleased to announce that Ms Gwen LEE, Director of the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF), will be one of the jury members of ASEF’s online photo contest On the Go. All budding and professional photographers can submit their work at www.asef.org/onthego to participate in this online contest.
Q. What is creativity for you?
Creativity is lending new insight and sparking conversation between people, and in this case photograph and the viewer.
Q. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw my inspiration from nature and my daily conversation with people around me.
Q. What is the last project you have been working on?
I am curating a photography exhibition at the Dali International Photography Exhibition. It is titled “Gold & Green: The Making of Singapore Photography” and narrates the recent photographic works in Singapore. The show will be launched on 5 August 2015 in Dali, Yunnan, China, and subsequently will tour to other cities.
Q. On the Go’s theme is the motion and pace of life in Asia and Europe, illustrating those moments how we can be different and similar at the same time. How would you associate with this theme?
I personally think there are more similarities than differences – common values in relationships, family, dreams we have for the future, etc. The theme On the Go is broad to encompass all aspects of life, and could mean moments of action, or the purpose that compels individual or community to take action, and suggest the beat and rhythm in their ways of living.
Q. What are your expectations as the judge of this competition?
I love photography as a medium and I am hoping to see works beyond of what I could imagine.
Q. How will you judge a photo?
First I think the work should address the theme creatively. As there will also be a photography exhibition, I would consider the quality of the submitted images in terms of the approach towards subject matter, the ideas behind the work, the creation of the photographic images in terms of composition, and light etc.
