Ambassador Toru MORIKAWA, ASEF’s Executive Director, was invited to attend a roundtable dialogue on health security preparedness organised by the World Health Organization (WHO) at the 2022 Global Health Security Conference held in Singapore.
This topical side event focused on WHO’s instruments and initiatives to foster and advance countries’ health security preparedness capacities. It provided an update about WHO’s work on spearheading a concerted effort at global, regional, and country level to reinforce and further grow established and developing preparedness and response platforms and mechanisms. The side meeting also offered key partners the opportunity to share their experiences and thoughts on how to best advance the implementation of health security preparedness processes and initiatives and on the value of multisectoral partnerships to achieve the former.
Regarding this last aspect, as part of the panel on ‘Leveraging Partnerships for Health Security Action’, Ambassador MORIKAWA highlighted ASEF’s role in fostering collaboration and dialogue among ASEM Partners on elevating health emergency preparedness capacities in both the health and non-health sectors thanks to the ASEF Public Health Network. He also stated ASEF’s continued commitment to working in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) for the improvement of health security globally.
