ASEF COM Department is delighted to organise the 13th ASEF Journalists Seminar after a hiatus of more than two years. In the opening ceremony, Amb Michaela FRONKOVA, ASEF Governor from the Czech Republic & Amb to Singapore, and Amb NG Teck Hean, ASEM Senior Official from Singapore, joined Amb Toru MORIKAWA, ASEF Executive Director.

In Module 1: Impact Storytelling and Constructive Journalism, Dr Suwichit (Sean) Chaidaroon and Dr Kai Ruo Soh from the NUS Communications & New Media Dept reflected on linking Solutions Journalism with other genres of journalism: citizen journalism & investigative journalism. During this session, participants were introduced to an Asian approach and new perspectives in framing news stories and winning back the audience.
Module 2: Constructive Journalism: optimising resilience and impact for journalists and media organisations, Kathryn Geels, a consultant based in Australia, shared her European experience on ‘Constructive Journalism’ through the lens of optimising resilience and impact for journalists & media organisations.
Module 3: News Production in the Digital Age: Mapping Journalistic Trends and Transformations, Dr Shangyuan Wu from NUS shared perspectives on the implications of automation on news organisations, journalists, and audiences. Participants also discussed Data Journalism and journalistic trends for news production in the Digital Age.
Module 4: Mobile storytelling: How to tell stories to an audience on a small screen, Jeremy Au Yong, Mobile Editor of The Straits Times shared how one Asian mainstream newspaper responded to the mobile revolution by engaging participants on how traditional news can be presented on mobile through the 3F’s of Flow, First impressions and Finger.
Organised by ASEF, traditionally as an official side-event of the ASEM Foreign Ministers Meeting, the ASEF Journalists Seminar (ASEFJS) series aims to promote dialogue and networking opportunities amongst the media communities of Asia and Europe. The Seminar features a dynamic format, combining different modules and their related sub-topics to curate a useful educational experience for all participants.
