The World Cup Roundtable on Promoting Mutual Understanding Among Cultures and Peoples was held in Seoul, Korea on 1st June, 2002 on the occasion of the 2002 World Cup. ASEF and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, with the support of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, gathered 17 eminent persons, comprising scholars, writers and opinion makers from different regions for a roundtable to exchange perspectives on efforts to promote mutual understanding among different cultures and peoples.
The roundtable bore recognition of the important role of the game of football and sports in general, as a medium to foster international exchanges and understanding among peoples.
Among major figures attending the meeting were renowned culture critic Guy Sorman, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea James Laney, former Foreign Minister of Korea Han Seung-joo, and Foreign Minister of East Timor Jose Ramos-Horta.
