ASEM Outlook Report published

With the recent Asia-Europe Meeting Summit (ASEM9) as a backdrop, the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the United Nations University – Institute of Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) are organising the 4th ASEM Outlook Workshop. The workshop will explore emerging policy issues and assess future areas of cooperation within the ASEM dialogue process. The workshop takes place in Singapore (3-4 December 2012) bringing together a selected group of 20 emerging Asian and European experts from different organisations.

For the first time in this series, an ASEM Outlook Report has been published in advance of the workshop. The ASEM Outlook Report serves as a key resource to better understand the forces influencing Asia-Europe relations today. The report imagines the possible impact of current policy decisions and provides innovative responses to help ensure greater economic, environmental and human prosperity.

The two-volume publication examines both the status and future possibilities for Asia-Europe relations. Volume One of the report is comprised of two sections:

The first section, “Facts and Figures”, compiles interesting data to better understand the current political and socio-economic conditions in both regions. It also displays the commonalities and differences between Asia and Europe. The section looks at statistics linked to a variety of policy areas, including economics, environment, information and communication technology, migration and labour, population, public health, research & development, and security and conflict.

The second section, “Perceptions Matter! — Views from Asia and Europe”, explores the public, media and opinion leaders’ perceptions that the two regions hold for each other. This section draws from the findings of ASEF’s ‘EU through the Eyes of Asia’ and ‘Asia in the Eyes of Europe’ studies.

Volume Two, “Foresight is 20/20” was developed through a series of multi-sector strategic foresight consultations conducted by ASEF. The volume presents an analysis of the opportunities and risks associated with three diverging yet possible future scenarios. It focuses on four critical sectors in Asia-Europe relations – soft security; environmental governance, economic and financial integration; and public health and pandemic preparedness.
