On 14-15 September 2021 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the ASEM Education Secretariat (AES) organised the 1st ASEM Education Senior Officials Meeting (SOM1) in preparation for the 8th ASEM Education Ministers’ Meeting (ASEMME8). The focus of the meeting was to finalise the ASEM Education Strategy 2030 and the related Action Plan to prove the basis for strengthening interregional cooperation in the ASEM Education Process over the coming years.
On Day 1 the Strategy and Action Plan was presented and discussed, followed by insights into ASEM Education Projects and Initiatives. ASEF’s Education Director, Ms Leonie NAGARAJAN, presented the work of ASEF’s Education Department in furthering the ASEM Education Process by enhancing connectivity between Asia & Europe and by boosting inclusive and balanced mobility and exchanges.
On Day 2, new ASEM Education Initiatives were presented by the European Training Foundation, UNESCO-UNEVOC, International Association of Universities (IAU), ASEM COIL, Institute for Adult Learning Singapore (IAL) and Erasmus Student Network (ESN). Following this were presentations by representatives of the 8th ASEF Regional Conference on Higher Education (ARC8) who highlighted 2 recently published reports:
- ARC8 Outlook Report on Inclusive & Diverse Higher Education, presented by Irina FERENCZ (Director, Academic Cooperation Association) and Assoc. Prof. Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti (Vice President for International Relations and Corporate Social Communication, Mahidol University, Thailand)
- National Equity Policy in Higher Education Study across ASEM, presented by Dr Graeme Atherton (Director, National Education Opportunities Network UK)
